Philosophy of Music Education

I believe a musical education should empower both performers and listeners to discuss, engage with, and explore a comprehensive variety of musical styles in a way that promotes lifelong learning and enjoyment.My primary goal as a music educator is to elevate students to realize their full potential through respectful, intense, genuine, and caring instruction that recognizes the importance of each individual and their role in the ensemble or classroom. Music classrooms should be exemplars of learning environments in which students can thrive.Learning music unlocks opportunities to establish cross-curricular channels to many other subject areas, and I believe these connections are a vital component of a well-rounded music education. Music can be a means by which students develop an appreciation and passion for self-guided lifelong learning.Intangible life lessons such as teamwork, communication, trust, discipline, personal responsibility, practice, and passion are important components of a strong music program.A musical education develops the whole student and allows for the growth and expression of strengths and interests that may not be revealed or nurtured through traditional, core subjects. Learning music serves the primary purpose of a free public education, which is to create well-rounded, functional, and contributing citizens in our democracy with an emphasis on human values.
